    Bonn\/Winningen\/Kallstadt, November 28, 2025 At its regular general meeting, FAIR’N GREEN e.V. bids farewell to one of its most influential founding members: Reinhard L\u00f6wenstein, winemaker, philosopher, and one of the most important driving forces behind sustainability in German viticulture, is stepping down from his position on the board after 12 years. The association honors him for his life’s work and appoints him as an honorary member of the board. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Pioneer of modern Moselle Riesling<\/strong><\/p>

    The Heymann-L\u00f6wenstein winery is one of the leading estates that have restored Mosel Riesling to international renown. L\u00f6wenstein was an early and uncompromising advocate of terroir wines, characterized by slate, climate, and steep slopes\u2014and thus became a voice that attracted attention far beyond the region. With his book Terroir: “Terroir. Weinkultur und Weingenuss in einer globalen Welt”\u202f, he had a significant impact on the debate about authentic, unadulterated wines. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Pioneer of sustainability<\/strong><\/p>

    L\u00f6wenstein was a pioneer long before sustainability became a buzzword in society. For him, it was clear: soil means vitality. A vineyard is an ecosystem. And people deserve respect. This attitude laid one of the foundations for FAIR’N GREEN.<\/p>

    The idea was born at the end of 2012 during a dinner between Dr. Keith Ulrich and Reinhard L\u00f6wenstein in Bonn. A conversation about what sustainability in viticulture could look like in concrete terms gave rise to an idea, then a concept, and finally an association.<\/p>

    Together with Dr. Keith Ulrich, winemakers such as Clemens Busch, and scientists from Geisenheim University, L\u00f6wenstein developed the first FAIR’N GREEN criteria catalog, which he actively formulated, discussed, and scrutinized down to the smallest detail. Many of his convictions continue to shape the system to this day. Reinhard L\u00f6wenstein thus became one of the pioneers of sustainability in German viticulture.<\/p>

    <\/p>

    A board characterized by attitude and enthusiasm for discussion<\/strong><\/p>

    For over 12 years, L\u00f6wenstein helped shape the FAIR’N GREEN board with his passionate enthusiasm for discussion, clarity, uncompromising quality standards, and constant focus on creating an ideology-free, rigorous, and value-based standard for sustainable viticulture. The fact that FAIR’N GREEN was founded in Winningen in 2013 lends this moment a special symbolism to this day: the association was created in the place where L\u00f6wenstein’s understanding of terroir, responsibility, and sustainability had grown over decades. <\/p>

    Reinhard L\u00f6wenstein’s work was also honored on behalf of other winegrowers’ associations, represented by FAIR’N GREEN members Andrea Wirsching and Clemens Busch. Clemens Busch, also a founding member of FAIR’N GREEN, emphasized his importance in the Association “Deutscher Pr\u00e4dikatsweing\u00fcter”. For 18 years, L\u00f6wenstein shaped the VDP Presidium \u201cwith a constructive view of classification and unmistakable commitment.\u201d Andrea Wirsching, managing director of the Hans Wirsching Winery, also praised L\u00f6wenstein’s important role in the wine world. He is considered a driving force behind the Twin Wineries Initiative, a network of over 40 wineries from Germany and Israel that uses wine as a cultural bridge builder.<\/p>

    Acknowledgements and prospects<\/strong><\/p>

    The board and members of FAIR’N GREEN would like to thank Reinhard L\u00f6wenstein for his extraordinary commitment, his inspiration, and his attitude, which have had a significant impact on the association. His appointment as an honorary member of the board not only recognizes his work and lifetime achievements. It is also a promise: the values he has instilled\u2014respect, authenticity, responsibility\u2014will continue to form the foundation of the association.<\/p>
