The Wittmann winery has been growing wine in the old market town of Westhofen in southern Rheinhessen since 1663. Over the centuries, the winery has developed from this long tradition into its present form. Philipp Wittmann and his wife Eva share the management of the estate with Philipp’s parents, Günter and Elisabeth Wittmann.
A total of 30 hectares of vineyards are cultivated. Most of these are planted with Riesling vines, but the Burgundy and Silvaner varieties also have a long tradition in Westhofen. For over 20 years, all vineyards have been cultivated in a controlled organic manner. The vines are deeply rooted in the living soil; this promotes the expression of the terroir in the wine.
Die FAIR’N GREEN-Zertifizierung ist eine große Hilfe, um einen ganzheitlichen Überblick darüber zu erhalten, was in und um das Weingut in Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit geschieht.

‘The FAIR’N GREEN certification helps immensely in gaining a holistic view of what is happening in and around the winery in terms of sustainability.’

The vineyards have been cultivated biodynamically since 2004. For the Wittmann estate, biodynamic viticulture in practice means a lot of manual extra work on the vines, making optimum use of sun, wind and rainfall. The uncompromising renunciation of chemical-synthetic pesticides, herbicides and mineral fertilizers keeps the soil alive and ensures that the vines are deeply rooted.
Healthy vines thrive on these healthy soils and ultimately guarantee high wine quality and the optimal expression of the terroir in the wines.
True to the old winemaker’s adage “The wine is made in the vineyard”, the biodynamic cultivation of the vineyards offers the opportunity to vinify wines with character, depth and complexity. Intensive manual work in the vineyard guarantees the highest possible grape quality in the winery.
