                      Winery Rudolf May

                      The Rudolf May winery in the Franconian town of Retzstadt, north of Würzburg, was founded in 1998 after the family’s ancestors had already been active as grape growers.

                      The Rudolf May winery now cultivates 15.8 hectares, which are planted with approx. 75% Silvaner. Other grape varieties are: Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Riesling. The aim of the winery is to produce expressive wines characterised by shell limestone with fine mineral notes – especially in the Silvaner. A large part of the Silvaner area is planted with old vines (6 hectares with an age between 35 and 58 years).

                      Philosophy

                      NOTHING works without hard work. No vineyard is too steep. The steeper the site, the greater the challenge. Who would have thought that Retzstadt could be the origin of mercilessly honest wines – that here lies the challenge to give new meaning to the word terroir?

                      FOR the Rudolf May winery, ambition is part of the job. You can’t do it without it. Hands, mind and imagination are the starting point. Persistence, bite and energy are constant companions. And in the end, everyone at the winery is only satisfied when no grape is a compromise.

                      BEGINNERS are satisfied more quickly, grow in experience and, when the passion really burns, become more and more freaks. These people are a pure joy to the Rudolf May winery, because they share his passion for nature, intensity and purity.

                      When working in the vineyard, the yield is reduced and only healthy grapes are used. In the cellar, Weingut Rudolf May does not add any additives such as enzymes or yeasts to most of its wines, apart from small amounts of sulphurous acid. It has been a certified organic winery since 2016 (DE-ÖKO-806).
