Winery Nelles
The Nelles estate was first mentioned in a document in 1479. The local interest register shows that Peter Nelis was the tenant of a “wyngartz an der buysch portzen”. An unusually high interest rate was paid to the lords of Landskrone Castle for this property. Then as now, it was an excellent vineyard. The brand name 1479N still stands for the date of the documentary mention. Thomas Nelles has been running the business since the 1970s, now together with his son Philip. The winery is a member of the VDP and the “dieGüter.de” network.
The Nelles winery cultivates 8.5 hectares of vineyards, mainly on steep slopes with a gradient of more than 30%. The grape varieties cultivated here are Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir, Domina, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Since the 1980s, the two great growths “B48” and “B52” have also been marketed. Source Eichelmann 2018
“As a member of Fair and Green, we attach great importance to a sustainable approach to nature. For example, we do a lot to ensure that insects and bees have their natural place in the vineyard.”

Philosophy
Careful cultivation of the vineyard is particularly important to the Nelles winery. If necessary, manure, straw and other organic materials are used as fertilizer. By mulching the weeds in the vineyards, the winery also improves the humus content and soil life in the vineyards. Beneficial insects are encouraged in order to maintain and promote the balance of the vineyard ecosystem.
Brilliant Pinot Noirs with a silky smooth aroma are produced in the cellar of the Nelles winery. The estate’s white wines impress with their harmonious acidity and pleasant fruitiness. This is not least the result of the particularly gentle processing in the wine cellar.
The grapes are completely destemmed before fermentation, i.e. processed without stems and stalks. The winery relies on traditional mash fermentation to preserve the typical expression of Ahr wines and on natural self-clarification during ageing. Although this process takes longer than conventional filtering methods, it is gentler on the wines.
No fining agents are used, as these remove minerals and other important wine constituents. All wines are matured separately according to grape variety in barriques and the best red wines are bottled without filtration.
