The Cantina Kaltern winery was created from the merger of the original four Kaltern winery co-operatives. In 1986, the “Erste Kellerei” and “Neue Kellerei” (founded in 1900 and 1925 respectively) merged to form the “Erste + Neue” winery. In 1992, the two other wineries – the Bauernkellerei and the Jubiläumskellerei (founded in 1906 and 1908 respectively) merged to form the Kellerei Kaltern. In 2016, these two winegrowers’ cooperatives merged to form today’s Cantina Kaltern winery. Christian Sinn is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the cooperative.
There are around 1000 winegrowers in Kaltern. The majority of them have less than one hectare of farmland. The Cantina Kellerei Kaltern itself has 650 members with a total vineyard area of 471 hectares. Each year, 3.4 million bottles of red and white wine are produced, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. The soils are mostly interspersed with scree and clay tongues or fine material and lie on volcanic, calcareous rock or rock deposited by rivers or glaciers.
Some winegrowers cultivate their vineyards according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture. The winegrowers’ co-operative supports and promotes the small member businesses and thus actively contributes to the preservation of a unique cultural landscape on Lake Kaltern.
“In Kaltern, viticulture has been practised in small structures for centuries. It should stay that way. FAIR’N GREEN supports us in our endeavours to create and maintain the conditions for this.”
Christian Sinn, Managing Director
