The Juwel Weine winery from Alsheim in Rheinhessen produces dry quality wines. The grapes ripen into raw gemstones on multi-faceted vineyards, which are given the finishing touches through a great deal of manual labour and knowledge and thus become jewels. After studying ‘Viticulture and Oenology’ at Geisenheim University, Juliane Eller took over her parents’ winery in 2013 at the age of 23. From mechanical harvesting and barrel wine production with around 35 grape varieties, the range was streamlined to 5 grape varieties and the winery gradually switched to selective hand-picking.
‘We winegrowers have long since ceased to be just food producers. Rather, we are seen as custodians of the rural cultural heritage. We work with and in nature, create an ecosystem, plant new vineyards and preserve them for generations to come. For me, a sustainable wine industry specifically means that we do not consume more resources than can grow back. I want to continue to raise awareness of sustainability and work with my team year after year to keep improving.’

The wines have been marketed under the newly founded JUWEL Weine brand since 2013. Juliane Eller is particularly focussed on natural and sustainable viticulture.
The wines are produced in the traditional way. This pure craft means that the yield is deliberately reduced throughout the wine year and only 100% healthy grapes are harvested and processed during the harvest. This achieves extremely high quality and value. Juliane Eller wants to get young people in particular excited about wine and show them that great wine doesn’t have to travel far. She wants to create an awareness of traditional craftsmanship and is committed to the motto LESS IS MORE.
