The Joh. Bapt. Schäfer winery is located on the lower Nahe in the idyllic wine village of Burg Layen near Rümmelsheim. Sebastian Schäfer took over the winery from his father in 2002 in the fourth generation. In the meantime, 9 hectares of vineyards are cultivated.
Alongside the Burgundy varieties, Riesling plays the main role in the range with 60%. The Riesling vines, which are up to 50 years old, are rooted in the stony, weathered soils of the classified VDP GROSSEN LAGEN Pittermännchen and Goldloch. Riesling is also grown in VDP.ERSTEN LAGEN Burg Layer Schlossberg, Laubenheimer Karthäuser and Rümmelsheimer Steinköpfchen.
“The big picture view with Fair and Green convinced us. The certification process has given us a deep insight into measures that we can use to take our family business even further in the direction of sustainability.”

Sebastian Schäfer’s aim is to produce individual Rieslings with a strong character that perfectly reflect their terroir. The majority of the wines are vinified dry, characterised by an expressive minerality. In peak years, grandiose noble sweet rarities are produced. The winery has been a member of the VDP since 2013.
