The Hubertus M. Apel winery has been active in viticulture since 1477 and has lived in Nittel for just as long. While his great-grandfather was still mainly active as a wine merchant, Hubertus Matthias and his wife Elfriede drove the wine production forward.
This development work was continued in 1988 by his sons Harald and Hubert, who have worked together for over 30 years to build the business into one of the most modern wineries on the Moselle.
In 2016, the fourth generation of brothers Philip, Johannes and Matthias followed their father Harald into the family business. A family business through and through!
The winery cultivates a total of 38 hectares of vineyards and focuses on two grape varieties. The traditional grape variety Elbling on the one hand, which has experienced a small renaissance in recent years, and the beauty of the Burgundy family on the other.
The guiding principle of the Hubertus M Apel winery is therefore today and in the future:
“Elbling by tradition – Burgundy by passion”
“For us, it is important that sustainability does not stop in the vineyard. In addition to environmental aspects, sustainability also includes good and fair treatment of our employees, customers and suppliers, resource-saving work processes, open and transparent production and many other points with regard to ecological, social, economic and cultural responsibility.”

“Doing everything in harmony with nature to bring wine to perfection” is the philosophy of the Apel winemaking family. This interaction, attention to detail and, above all, taking time determine the work of the winery. Careful transportation of the grapes, gentle, long pressing at low pressure, pre-clarification through natural settling and slow fermentation with their own yeasts give the wines of the Hubertus M. Apel winery a high quality year after year.
