Winery Egon Schmitt

The Egon Schmitt winery was founded in 1976 by Inge and Egon Schmitt with around 7 hectares of vines and a few apple orchards. Before that, grapes had already been produced – but for a local cooperative. In the meantime, the Egon Schmitt vineyard has grown to 20 hectares. Jochen Schmitt has also been working in the family business since 1996 after completing his studies.

In addition to Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are also cultivated. The Egon Schmitt winery’s red wines are Pinot Noir, Dornfelder and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards of the Egon Schmitt estate are all located in the Dürkheim region.

“We have been working in our vineyards according to the guidelines of controlled, environmentally friendly viticulture out of conviction for over twenty years. Since the 2008 vintage, we have been practicing organic production on parts of our farm in order to slowly develop our estate in this direction. As a young family, however, we have become increasingly aware in recent years that a way of farming that is truly compatible with nature in the long term cannot be based solely on the overly rigid organic criteria of pure agricultural production and winegrowing. The concept of “Fair and Green” convinces us with its holistic approach, which also takes into account the social responsibility of our family business. We see this as a real instrument for practising the profession of winegrower sustainably in harmony with nature, the region and its people. To enable our children to experience the fascination of viticulture in an intact environment.”

Philosophy

The Schmitt family cultivates their vineyard in an environmentally friendly manner according to the principle of sustainable viticulture. The work in the vineyard and in the cellar is characterized by a harmonious interplay between tradition and modernity.

In this sense, there have already been research projects with the DLR Neustadt, for example. Since 2015, all of the winery’s wines have also been considered CO2-neutral. A CO2 balance including indirect emissions is drawn up annually for the winery. Unavoidable emissions are offset by climate protection projects.

The great awareness of his responsibility towards the environment and future generations also gave rise to the drive to act as a founding member of Fair and Green e.V. and to manage the winery in accordance with the FAIR’N GREEN guidelines for sustainable viticulture.
