Johannisberg Castle was founded around 1100 as a Benedictine monastery. In 1720, Johannisberg came into the possession of the prince abbot from Fulda, who converted the entire cultivation to Riesling. Today, the estate is considered the first Riesling vineyard in the world. Schloss Johannisberg is also the birthplace of the Spätlese and the ascending Prädikate, as the value of noble rot was discovered here in 1775 as a result of a delayed harvest authorisation. After the Congress of Vienna, Schloss Johannisberg and its vineyard were the reward for the services of State Chancellor Metternich.

Winery Schloss Johannisberg
Today, 50 hectares are cultivated, forming a single vineyard surrounding the mountain. The winery focuses on regionality and sustainability – the wood for the barrels comes from its own nearby oak forest and the castle park is home to 10 bee colonies – the honey can be found in the wine shop on site.
