Bernhard Koch Winery
The Bernhard Koch winery in Hainfeld can trace its family crest back to the year 1610. Since then, winegrowing has been a passion in this classic Palatinate family business. Today, Bernhard Koch runs the business together with his wife Christine, who takes care of customer service and sales. Bernhard Koch had to practically take over his parents’ estate at an early age. He later gained valuable experience on many trips abroad to wine-growing regions. Since a trip to Champagne in 1982, his passion and commitment has been sparkling wine production alongside the production of top wines. Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, among others, are cultivated on around 53 hectares of loamy to sandy soils.
“Wine is a cultural asset. Our family has been cultivating vineyards for over 400 years. It is important for us to preserve this culture, nature and our soils in a sustainable way. With the holistic approach of FAIR’N GREEN, we want to continue to produce outstanding top wines in the future. This can only be achieved by taking into account the entire value chain, responsible action and fair cooperation between winegrowers, our team of employees and our customers.”

Philosophy
The absolute focus is on the work in the vineyard. Today, with the analyzed knowledge of soil types and their effects on the different grape varieties, the winery can take a very targeted approach. Consistent manual work is indispensable, and that at any time of year. Vines are like children. They should be given the freedom to develop, but there must be clear rules and boundaries so that they can grow into individual characters.
Year after year, a great deal of painstaking manual work goes into accompanying the free course of nature and the weather in such a way that healthy, ripe grapes are produced time and again, which can then be shaped into clear, expressive wines. Low yields form the basis for full-bodied grapes. In the cellar, the motto is not to stress the wine, but to accompany it and give it the opportunity to develop its own character. Estate wines, local wines and site wines are created in this overall, sensible interplay.
