Achkarren winegrowers' cooperative
Winzergenossenschaft Achkarren eG in Kaiserstuhl was the first cooperative in Baden to be successfully FAIR’N GREEN certified in December 2021. The cooperative currently cultivates around 190 hectares of vines, mainly Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, as the Achkarren Schlossberg with its volcanic weathered rock is particularly suitable for fine Burgundy wines with a wonderful mineral character.
The success reflects the image of a sustainable orientation: two grapes were awarded in the current GaultMillau wine guide, and even three in the individual assessment of the Pinot Noir Edition A. Falstaff also awarded the Achkarren winegrowers’ cooperative two stars and gave five wines scores of over 90 points – an absolute rarity for cooperatives!
“The whole thing demands a lot from our team and, above all, from our winegrowers. But a clear majority of our winegrowers have spoken out in favor of FAIR’N GREEN certification with a great deal of foresight.”
Michael Kunzelmann, Chairman of the Executive Board

Philosophy
Holistic sustainability plays a central role in the cooperative’s future orientation and is practiced in its daily activities: 100% of production is powered by green electricity, a third of which is generated by the photovoltaic system on the roof. When cultivating the vineyards, conscious attention is paid to using as little drinking water as necessary, biodiversity and beneficial organisms on the land are specifically promoted and the preservation of the cultural landscape is actively supported. Historic dry stone walls and terraces are preserved and characterize the landscape.
The cooperative plays a pioneering role in social interaction: fair wages and social commitment are a matter of course: regular training is provided and employees receive continuous training. Numerous members of the cooperative are active in clubs or the fire department.
