Martel becomes first international FAIR'N GREEN Certified Partner
As the first Swiss value chain partner in the wine industry, the Martel wine shop has been certified with the FAIR’N GREEN sustainability seal. Through its collaboration with the Swiss family business, FAIR’N GREEN has gained an experienced, committed, and widely networked partner in the wine trade.
Founded in 1876, Martel is now a fifth-generation family-run wine shop with three locations in St. Gallen and Zurich. The company is passionate about promoting wine culture and craftsmanship. It focuses on high-quality wines, exclusive imports from renowned wineries, and rare wines.
“Through its sustainable practices and focus on premium wines, Martel demonstrates how quality and responsibility can go hand in hand,” emphasizes Dr. Keith Ulrich, CEO of FAIR’N GREEN.
In recent years, the Martel wine shop has increasingly focused on sustainability. As part of a materiality analysis, key areas for action were identified and specific sustainability goals were formulated, which the company has been systematically pursuing ever since. Martel aims to increase energy efficiency at its locations and convert its delivery fleet to electric drive in the future.
“As a fifth-generation family business, sustainability is in our DNA. We think, act, and invest for the long term. Since we work with a unique natural product, we are particularly motivated to act in an environmentally conscious manner,” emphasizes Managing Director Jan Martel.
The wine shop also takes responsibility on a social and cultural level: Martel supports numerous regional projects. In addition, the wine shop is one of the largest sponsors of the culturally and historically significant “Climats de Bourgogne” and donates funds for the preservation of traditional vineyard walls, for example.
With FAIR’N GREEN certification, Martel AG’s commitment is now documented by a recognized sustainability seal. The certification is based on a comprehensive catalog of criteria that includes requirements for environmental management, resource efficiency, social standards, and corporate governance. Compliance with these criteria is regularly reviewed by an independent body. The company is thus setting a new standard in the Swiss wine trade and committing itself to fulfilling its ecological, economic, and social responsibilities even more effectively in the future.
About FAIR’N GREEN:
FAIR’N GREEN is a certification standard developed for viticulture. In addition to the key environmental aspects, the underlying system also covers economic and social issues as well as the entire value chain. After certification, companies receive continuous counseling to guarantee lasting improvement effects. Almost 190 businesses from 11 countries are certified or in the process of certification. Since 2020, businesses in upstream and downstream areas of the wine value chain, such as label printing and wine trading, have also been certified as Certified Partners.
